Non-participation in social housing neighborhoods: A sign that the working classes are losing interest in their living spaces?

This article tries to understand the disinterest of tenants in taking part in participatory mechanisms that are usually used by social housing organizations in France. Our hypothesis is that the incompetence politic theory answers only part of this non-engagement in disadvantaged mass housing estates. To have a holistic understanding of the absence of participation, we show the importance of also considering the drivers of the participatory market, such as: the quest for cost reduction, the standardization of procedures and the impersonalization of relationships with tenants and social housing actors.
